If you're both in your home working on your problems, your odds are good.

If you're semi-separated, living under the same roof but sleeping in different beds, your odds are worse than above.

If you're fully separated, living in two households, your odds are not so good.

There are times to do each of these things. Just be aware that if you force one of the more drastic steps (if your spouse refuses to end an affair, for example), your odds go down.

The book, Save the Marriage, gives a great explanation and a step-by-step plan for dealing with separation and when it's called for.

I totally disagree! There are times when the only thing that can save the marriage is a trial marriage separation. It gives the couple a chance to see each other on neutral grounds. If you begin dating your spouse during a trial separation, it gives you a chance to evaluate your life and where your spouse fits in. Going on dates will make sure that your marriage is still being worked on.

There are definitely some do's and don'ts when it comes to marriage separation. If your committed to making your marriage work and acknowledging that you both need your own space to evaluate what's going on and how to fix your relationship, the better for your marriage. Most times, couples just need their own space to figure out what needs to change because many times it gets to the point where you guys can't even breathe in the same room together. It doesn't necessarily mean your marriage is over, there is hope as long as you do it RIGHT.
